I have to ask though, are people generally aware of you taking pictures of them? Do you ask permission, or do they generally not care? In my experience, I usually end up explaining that I'm just taking them for my personal collection, and do they mind, etc. Maybe I just need a stronger zoom lens...

To be honest, most of the time I try to take the picture quickly without giving any time to people to complain. Sometimes I pretend to take a picture of the subject behind them or next to them and occasionally I speak to them and ask for their permission. I prefer not to do that though because they won’t look very natural then.
But my favourite technique is to look through the viewfinder and compose my picture the way I like and then wait for people to walk into my shot.
Hopefully this year I will invest in a Tele zoom lens as well but until then let’s hope that people won’t beat me up :)
PS, we have the same taste in movies.
