If you ask Pollock why he started dripping paint on the floor, his answer probably would have been "just because!". But that's just my opinion.
Personally, I kind of like it b&w because of exactly your point. Too many colors can distract you. You can instead focus on things like the people? In other words, the soul of the picture?
To me the looks on their faces, the shadows, and their stance tells a story.
