Fashion Police | May 20, 2006 6:27AM That's beautiful. What is a Darvazeh?
Hugh Petrie| May 20, 2006 8:38AM Looks like a rather different design of Mosque to me. Quite attractive.
Allahu Akbar!
Tima | May 20, 2006 12:59PM Fashion Police ... Darvazeh is a "gate'" to the city. I do believe back then, they used to build cities with many gates ... perhaps to protect the city and kind of keep an eye on who's going in and out. This one is truly a work of art. So delicate ... almost like a Victorian "lace".
Fashion Police | May 21, 2006 4:27AM How interesting Tima. Thanks
Maziar Adl | May 22, 2006 4:44PM Now that we're at it, here is my two cents,
If I'm remembering this right, Tehran grew from a village to become a city that was actually walled (by the order of one of the kings of the Safavid dynasty) and had in excess of 100 fortresses on its borders with gates (around the early-mid 16th century AD again off the top of my head!) This one is only one out of many gates some of which do not exist anymore. Tehran later became the capital of Iran (or Persia at the time) and expanded, at times, almost out of control. Today the remaining gates are way inside the city due to the cities expansion over the years. Each gate has a name and I don't know the name of this one. Maybe Kami or Tima can help there.
Tima | May 22, 2006 5:20PM Mazi jon, all I know is that it looks too familiar. I wonder if it's near the old main post office of Tehran ... somewhere downtown. When I was about 7 or 8, my dad and I used to go there once a week so he could check his POBox:-) To this day iIremember his box # .... it was 592 :-)!!! now ask what i had for dinner lsat night!!!! :-) I hope kami could help us out here.
